“After a pair of ducks in the Port Elizabeth Test the selectors had had enough of the glorious disappointment that is Gibbs. His undeniable talent is matched only by his frustrating, sometimes infuriating, inconsistency, particularly at Test level. The selectors, including coach Mickey Arthur, simply couldn’t justify retaining him in the squad (even if Cricket South Africa chairman Norman Arendse felt they should).

Neil McKenzie’s four year wait between Tests ended at Newlands. But that dream return died as rapidly as it started. A torn calf muscle means the 32-year-old has to once again prove himself on the domestic scene when he returns after a predicted six week lay-off.

Ryan also makes mention of other unlucky players being overlooked including Andrew Puttick from the Cape Cobras.

The most encouraging news, from the perspective of local supporters, is that Shaun Pollock looks set to play his first Test in nearly a year. The 33-year-old veteran, who has waited patiently in the wings since his last Test against Pakistan on January 19-23 last year, is being widely tipped for a recall on his home ground, with either Andre Nel or Paul Harris being given a rest.

“I’ve certainly played a waiting game,” the flame-haired seamer joked yesterday. “But, if I do get chosen, it would obviously be great to play on my home ground.”

Beer Pong is a game that is fairly easy to understand. A simple explanation directly from the World Series of Beer Pong rulebook…

“Beer pong itself is simple. Two teams stand at opposite ends of an 8-foot long table, where ten 16-ounce cups, filled with roughly 2 ounces of beer or another liquid, are placed in a bowling-pin formation. Each team takes turns tossing ping-pong balls at their opponent’s cup formation. If a ball goes into a cup, the cup is removed from the game. The first team to eliminate all of its opponent’s cups wins.”

With the final just around the corner, both Mamelodi Sundowns coach Gordon Igesund and Kaizer Chiefs boss Muhsin Ertugral have taken time out from their preparations to praise the tournament sponsors, Telkom for a job well done.

“We must thank Telkom for putting forward a great opportunity for us here,” said Ertugral.

He added: “It’s a major cup, very important cup for us and the organisation has been tremendous and wonderful. It’s the most highly paid cup in Africa, so it has huge, huge interest.

“So, for us, I must say thank you very much for the wonderful organisation and I hope it’s going to be a wonderful day.”

Igesund, meanwhile, said both teams were very happy to have reached the final of this lucrative competition.

“I just think it’s a wonderful day for South African football. Both teams’ sets of supporters expect every time we go onto the field that we have to win the game,” said Igesund.

“It’s always going to be a difficult game, tight game; players don’t want to make mistakes. They get nervous out there, but I’ve told my players to enjoy their game; let’s go out there and enjoy it.

“I think it’s a sponsor’s dream to have Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs playing in a final. It’s a fantastic competition; it’s been run tremendously well with a lot of money being put into it. They (Telkom) have led by example and we just hope we can go out there and make them all proud,” concluded Igesund.

Don’t think Jake will really be losing any sleep over this.

SA Rugby has denied Jake’s requests of wanting to field all 26 players for the match against the Barbarians this Saturday, as well as calling the team a ‘Bok XV’. White made these requests as the match had no test status.

The decisions doesn’t really surprise - not that SA Rugby gave a good reason - but because of their animosity towards Jake.
